Where to Stay in Pucón: Best Areas and Recommended Hotels (2026)

Pucón is a mountain town on the shores of Lake Villarrica, at the foot of the volcano of the same name, and Chile's capital of adventure tourism. In summer people come to hike among araucaria trees, go rafting, hit the lake beach and soak in hot springs; in winter there is skiing on the volcano. Choosing the right area changes the trip: downtown keeps everything within walking distance, the lakeshore adds beach and views, and the road to Caburgua means peace and nature.

How to get to Pucón

Pucón has no commercial flights of its own: you fly to Temuco and continue by road, or come directly by bus or car.

✈️La Araucanía Airport (ZCO), in Temuco — about 90-92 km from Pucón: around 1 h 20 min by car or taxi, and private transfers are also available. Pucón's airfield currently has no confirmed commercial flights.
🛫Flights from Santiago — LATAM, Sky and JetSMART fly to Temuco; the flight takes about 1 h 20 min.
🚌Long-distance bus — Santiago–Pucón is 786 km, about 10 hours. There are departures all day and most people travel overnight, with semi-sleeper, full-sleeper and premium seats.
🚗By car — from Santiago it is about 780 km: head south on Route 5 to Freire, then continue on Route 199-CH, which passes through Villarrica before reaching Pucón.
🏔️From Argentina — via the Mamuil Malal pass, open from 8 am to 8 pm: San Martín de los Andes is 181 km away, about 3 hours by car. On the Argentine side the road is under construction and there have been afternoon closures; in winter chains are mandatory.
🚍Regional buses — JAC buses run to Villarrica every hour (about 45 minutes), Buses Caburgua go to Lake Caburgua and Huerquehue on a limited schedule, and from the Pullman terminal there are buses to the Huife valley.

The 3 best areas to stay in Pucón

Lakefront of downtown Pucón with buildings and boats

1. Downtown The most practical without a car

The streets O'Higgins, Fresia, Colo Colo and Gerónimo de Alderete: you can walk to restaurants, tour agencies and the bus terminals, and the beach is 300-400 meters away. It is the area with the most hostels and small hotels, ideal if you arrive by bus. The downside: there are bars, and some guests report loud music at bedtime; hotel parking lots are also usually small.

2. Playa Grande and the lakeshore Lake and volcano views

The Roberto Geiss waterfront and Playa Grande, steps from downtown, and to the west the road to Villarrica, with hotels and aparthotels with gardens and lake views. Good for couples and families traveling in summer for the beach. The downside: in summer it is the busiest area, and accommodations along the road to Villarrica depend on a car.

3. Camino Internacional and the road to Caburgua Quiet and volcanoes

The eastern exit of town: it starts on the Camino Internacional, a couple of kilometers from downtown, and continues along the road to Caburgua, with lodges and cabins with views of the volcanoes. This is the way to Huerquehue, the Ojos del Caburgua, the hot springs and the Mamuil Malal pass. The downside: far from town, without a car you depend on buses with limited schedules.

Plan the rest of your trip

Downtown Pucón can be explored on foot, and the tour agencies and buses leave from there: JAC to Villarrica every hour, Buses Caburgua to Lake Caburgua and Huerquehue, and buses to the Huife valley from the Pullman terminal. If you stay on the road to Villarrica or the road to Caburgua, a car gives you a lot of freedom, because buses run on limited schedules. In winter, the road to the ski resort can be icy: 4x4 and chains are recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Can you climb the Villarrica volcano?
Right now there is no certainty. Since September 4, 2026, Sernageomin has kept the volcano on yellow technical alert because of the rising lava lake, and there is no confirmation that ascents to the crater will be allowed. The ascent takes place only when the authority allows it: check the status before you travel in the notices from Sernageomin, Senapred and Conaf, and always hire authorized guides.
Can you fly directly to Pucón?
No. Pucón's airfield has no confirmed commercial flights, so air arrival is through La Araucanía (ZCO) airport in Temuco, where LATAM, Sky and JetSMART fly from Santiago. From there it is about 90 km to Pucón, around 1 h 20 min by car, taxi or private transfer.
How do you cross from Pucón to San Martín de los Andes?
Via the Mamuil Malal pass, open from 8 am to 8 pm all year. It is 181 km, about 3 hours by car, and there is a direct Igi Llaima bus from Tuesday to Sunday, taking about 4 h 20 min. On the Argentine side the road is under construction and there have been afternoon closures; in winter it can close because of snow and chains are mandatory.
Which hot springs are worth visiting from Pucón?
The closest ones are in the Liucura valley and along the road to Caburgua, 30-40 km away. Huife has pools at 38-40 °C and Los Pozones is open until 10 pm, so you can go at night. There are also Menetúe, San Luis and Quimey-Co. Termas Geométricas is about 52 km away. Without a car, there are buses and tours leaving from downtown.
Is it better to stay in Pucón or in Villarrica?
Pucón concentrates the adventure agencies, the departure point for Huerquehue, Caburgua and the hot springs, and a lively downtown for dining on foot. Villarrica, 27 km away on the same lake, can work as an alternative in high season, when Pucón fills up. Between the two there are JAC buses every hour, taking about 45 minutes, and by car it is about 27 minutes.
Are there pet-friendly places to stay in Pucón?
Yes: Pucón has about 160 places to stay that accept pets, mostly cabins and apartments; few hotels do. Of the places in this guide, Lucky's Hostel and Mirador Los Volcanes Lodge & Boutique allow pets (check beforehand whether there is a surcharge). See pet-friendly places to stay in Pucón →
