Where to stay in Puerto Natales and Torres del Paine: best areas and recommended hotels (2026)
Puerto Natales is a small town on the Última Esperanza Sound and the almost obligatory base for visiting Torres del Paine National Park, about 110 km away. It suits you if you're coming to hike —the W, the O or the day trek to Base Torres— or if you'd rather sleep in town and head out on excursions to glaciers, the Milodon Cave or Lake Grey. If you want to wake up facing the massif, there are hotels inside and on the edge of the park, at considerably higher prices.
How to get to Puerto Natales
There are two possible airports, frequent buses from Punta Arenas and El Calafate, and a road that's largely gravel on the stretch to the park.
✈️Teniente Julio Gallardo Airport (PNT) — 7 km from the centre, 7 to 20 minutes by taxi. Seasonal domestic flights only, from October to April (LATAM and SKY). In January, February and March 2027 there will be runway works and far fewer flights; when this guide was written there was no official schedule, so check before you book.
🛬Punta Arenas Airport (PUQ) — open all year, with flights from Santiago on LATAM, JetSMART and SKY. There are no direct flights from Buenos Aires to Natales: you go via Santiago, or fly to El Calafate and cross by bus.
🚌Bus Punta Arenas → Puerto Natales — Bus-Sur takes about 3 h 15 min and stops at Punta Arenas airport; it runs several times a day all year and a ticket costs around US$ 8–10. Buses Fernández also covers the route (~3 h).
🇦🇷From El Calafate (Argentina) — about 270 km via the Río Don Guillermo border crossing (Cerro Castillo–Cancha Carrera). Direct buses take 5 to 6 hours including border formalities: Bus-Sur, Turismo Zaahj, Cootra and Marga Taqsa.
🚗By car to the park — via Route 9: 58 km of tarmac to Cerro Castillo and then gravel. The Serrano entrance is 80 km away, Sarmiento 112 km and Laguna Amarga 129 km; about 2 h 15 min of driving.
🚍Bus to the park — Bus-Sur leaves every day from the Terminal Rodoviario (in the 2025/26 season at 7:00 and 12:00, and from November also at 14:30 and 18:00) and reaches Laguna Amarga in 2 h; ≈ US$ 14 one way or US$ 26 return. By sea, the Navimag ferry arrives from Puerto Montt.
The 3 best areas to stay in Puerto Natales
1. Central Puerto Natales The most practical
Around the Plaza de Armas and the Terminal Rodoviario everything is within walking distance: restaurants, agencies, gear hire and the buses that leave for Torres del Paine at 7 in the morning. It's the area with the most guesthouses and reasonably priced hotels, ideal if you're going to the park by bus. The downsides: small rooms, thin walls and hardly any with a view of the sound.
2. Waterfront Views of the sound
The hotels facing the Última Esperanza Sound look out over the channel and the mountains, and several are a 5–20 minute walk from the centre. It's the middle option: more view and more space than in the centre, for much less than inside the park. The downsides: those on the edge of town mean walking or taking a taxi at night, and the wind hits hard.
3. Inside or on the edge of the park To wake up facing the massif
Waking up facing the mountains and saving yourself 2 hours of driving a day is the big advantage, and some hotels sell excursions right from the door. The downsides: very high prices, expensive food with no alternatives nearby and, depending on the sector, you may still be far from the trails: from Río Serrano it's more than 90 minutes to Las Torres. Several lodges only sell all-inclusive packages.
Tours and activities in Puerto Natales
The park takes up most of the trip, but Natales is also the starting point for boat trips to glaciers and short excursions for bad-weather days.
7 recommended places to stay in Puerto Natales
Seven places to stay with excellent guest ratings: four in the centre, one on the waterfront and two in the park. The pros and cons come from what recent reviews mention again and again.

Incredible location. The bed was amazing! Almost better than my own bed. The staff were so lovely. Standard breakfast, good: eggs, bread and premium tea. The only downside is that sometimes the water ran cold.

10Give Rodolfo a pay rise
The hotel is very well located and the service is spectacular. The receptionist Rodolfo helped us with a mishap as soon as we arrived in Puerto Natales and was super attentive throughout our stay. It's a pleasure to stay at this hotel thanks to the quality of the service, the breakfast and its staff.

Plan the rest of your trip
Within Puerto Natales you get around on foot or by taxi. For the park you have three options: the daily Bus-Sur service from the Terminal Rodoviario, which reaches Laguna Amarga in about 2 hours and continues to Pudeto and the Grey sector; your own car via Route 9, with lots of gravel after Cerro Castillo; or a full-day excursion with an agency. Outside the season, CONAF requires a licensed guide and proper gear for the W and Base Torres in winter conditions.

The most popular things to see and do in Puerto Natales
Hike to Base Torres — The classic day hike from the Las Torres sector; you don't need to reserve a refuge, but in winter CONAF requires a guide.
Boat trip to Grey Glacier — By boat across Lake Grey to the face of the glacier, departing from Hotel Lago Grey (≈ US$ 57 per adult).
Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers — Boat trip from the Natales pier along the Última Esperanza Sound; full day of 8–9 h or half day of ~6 h.
Milodon Cave — A huge cave where remains of the mylodon were found, 24 km from Natales along Route 9.
Navimag ferry through the fjords — 4 days and 3 nights between Puerto Montt and Puerto Natales on a cargo ship that carries passengers; the weather can delay it by several days.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to stay in Puerto Natales or inside the park?
It depends on your plans. If you're doing the W, the nights on the trek have to be spent in pre-booked refuges or campsites, and Natales works for the night before and the night after. For day trips, Natales is much cheaper but adds about 2 hours of driving each way. Staying in the park saves travel time, although it costs several times more and isn't always close to the trail you want.
Do I have to book every night to do the W or the O?
Yes. To get onto the W or O Circuit trails you need to have every night booked in refuges or campsites, which are run by two private companies, not CONAF: Las Torres Patagonia and Vértice Patagonia. They sell out months in advance in high season. For a day hike, such as Base Torres, you don't need to book accommodation.
How do I buy a Torres del Paine entry ticket and how much does it cost?
Tickets are sold online only at pasesparques.cl, CONAF's official channel, at least 24 hours in advance: they aren't sold at the park entrance. Since May 2026, a foreign adult pays about US$ 33 for one day or about US$ 50 for a pass of two or more days, valid for up to 10 consecutive days. Children under 12 go free.
Should I fly to Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas?
Puerto Natales airport is 7 km from town, but it only has flights from October to April, and in January, February and March 2027 the runway will be under works, with far fewer flights and still no official schedule. Punta Arenas operates all year with more airlines; from its airport, the Bus-Sur bus drops you in Natales in about 3 and a quarter hours.
Can I combine it with El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier?
Yes, it's the most common combination. Puerto Natales and El Calafate are about 270 km apart, with direct buses taking 5 to 6 hours via the Río Don Guillermo border crossing (Cerro Castillo–Cancha Carrera). In high season they leave every morning. Keep your passport handy for the border formalities on both sides.
Are there pet-friendly places to stay in Puerto Natales?
Yes: Puerto Natales has about 20 places to stay that accept pets, mostly cabins and apartments; few hotels do. Of the places in this guide, El Sendero allows pets, free of charge and on request. See pet-friendly places to stay in Puerto Natales →
