Where to Stay in Puerto Madryn: Best Areas and Recommended Hotels (2026)
Puerto Madryn is a coastal city on the Golfo Nuevo and the base for exploring Península Valdés, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. From June to December southern right whales arrive, sometimes visible from the beach itself, and the area is also home to penguins, sea lions, elephant seals and, at certain times of year, orcas. The waterfront puts the gulf right in front of you, downtown brings you closer to the bus station at lower prices, and Puerto Pirámides puts you a few steps from the whales.
How to get to Puerto Madryn
Puerto Madryn has its own airport about 10 minutes from downtown, and Trelew's airport, with more flights, is less than an hour away; you can also arrive by bus or by car.
✈️El Tehuelche Airport, Puerto Madryn (PMY) — on Route 3, about 7 km from downtown: roughly 10 minutes by taxi or remís.
🛬Almirante Zar Airport, Trelew (REL) — 63 km from Puerto Madryn: about 45 minutes by car. From the airport entrance on Route 3, the company 28 de Julio runs buses every hour to the Madryn bus station (about 56 minutes).
🛫Flights from Buenos Aires — Aerolíneas Argentinas flies from Aeroparque to Puerto Madryn all year. Trelew is the airport with the most flights in the area, with several daily departures to Aeroparque.
🚌Long-distance bus — from Buenos Aires (Retiro or Liniers) it takes between 17.5 and 20 hours, with daily departures. Buses arrive at the Puerto Madryn bus station, downtown.
🚗By car — from Buenos Aires it is 1,327 km (about 16 h 20 min of driving) via Routes 205, 22, 251 and 3. It's best to split the trip with a night in Río Colorado; some stretches of Route 22 have potholes.
🐋Puerto Pirámides and Gaiman — Puerto Pirámides, inside Península Valdés, is 94 km away (about 1 h 30 by car; the company Mar y Valle runs buses of around 1 h 20). Gaiman, the Welsh village, is 81 km away: about 51 minutes by car or about 2 h 10 by bus, changing in Trelew.
The seafront strip along Av. Roca and Boulevard Brown, from the pier southward. This is where the 3- and 4-star hotels with the most reviews and the best location scores are, and from some rooms you can see whales. Good for first-time visitors, couples and families. The downside: parking is scarce and street parking is paid by the hour.
2. Downtown The most affordable
The blocks between Av. Roca and the bus station, about 3 to 6 blocks from the sea. There are very well-rated hostels and some 4-star hotels that cost less than those on the waterfront, with grocery stores and restaurants within walking distance. Good for backpackers, tight budgets and anyone arriving by bus. The downside: no sea views, and some streets are noisy.
3. Puerto Pirámides (Península Valdés) Facing the whales
The only town inside Península Valdés and the only place where whale-watching boats depart. It has inns and small hotels just steps from the beach. Good for anyone who wants to do more than one whale-watching trip or explore the peninsula without going back every night. The downsides: it is 94 km from Madryn, there are few restaurants and some close in the off-season.
Tours and activities in Puerto Madryn
Whales, penguins, sea lions and elephant seals: these are the outings you shouldn't miss from Puerto Madryn.
7 recommended places to stay in Puerto Madryn
Seven stays spread across the three areas: three facing the gulf, two downtown and two in Puerto Pirámides, from a hostel to 4-star hotels with a spa. The pros and cons come from what guests repeat in their reviews.

I want to thank the staff, who always answered all my questions. The breakfast was very tasty, with little things they make themselves. Plan the rest of your trip
The waterfront and downtown can be explored on foot, and there are also city buses, taxis and remises. For Península Valdés, Punta Tombo and Punta Loma you need to rent a car (there are several agencies in the city) or book a tour. Puerto Pirámides can be reached by car or on Mar y Valle buses, and Trelew on 28 de Julio buses, which leave every hour. If you plan to do the peninsula circuit on your own, a car gives you much more freedom.
The most popular things to see and do in Puerto Madryn
Whale-watching boat tour — Departs only from Puerto Pirámides, between June and December, on authorized boats.
El Doradillo — Protected area less than 20 minutes from Madryn, with paved access: you can watch whales from the shore for free.
Península Valdés circuit — Istmo Ameghino visitor center, sea lions at Punta Pirámide and elephant seals at Caleta Valdés and Punta Norte.
Punta Tombo — The largest continental colony of Magellanic penguins, 180 km to the south, with a 3 km round-trip trail.
Punta Loma Sea Lion Colony — Permanent sea lion colony 17 km away, on a gravel road; from the city you can do guided snorkeling or diving with sea lions.
Frequently asked questions
When can you see the whales, and where is the best place to watch them?
The southern right whale is at Península Valdés from June to December. There are two ways to see them: for free from the shore at El Doradillo, less than 20 minutes from Madryn, where they sometimes come within a few meters of the beach (check the tide table), or on a whale-watching boat tour, which departs only from Puerto Pirámides.
Should you stay in Puerto Madryn or in Puerto Pirámides?
Madryn has more hotels, restaurants and flights, and tours to the whole area leave from there, including Punta Tombo. Pirámides is 94 km away, inside the peninsula: it's a small town, but it faces the sea of the whales and the boats depart from there. It's best to spend most nights in Madryn and one or two in Pirámides, so you can do the whale watching without rushing.
Is it better to fly to Puerto Madryn or to Trelew?
Puerto Madryn (PMY) airport is about 10 minutes from downtown and Aerolíneas Argentinas connects it with Aeroparque all year, but it has fewer flights. Trelew (REL) is 63 km away, about 45 minutes by car, and has several daily departures to Aeroparque. A bus to Madryn leaves from the Trelew airport entrance every hour. Compare schedules and prices for both before buying.
When can you see penguins at Punta Tombo?
The reserve opens with the arrival of the Magellanic penguins, in September (in 2026 it opened on the 14th), and the season runs until late March or early April. Chicks hatch in November. It is about 180 km south of Madryn, so it is a full-day excursion, with a 3 km round-trip trail. Tickets are bought online.
When are there orcas at Península Valdés?
There are two windows. Between March and May, at Punta Norte, orcas deliberately strand themselves on the beach to hunt sea lion pups, a technique that is almost never seen elsewhere in the world. Between October and November they enter Caleta Valdés to hunt elephant seal pups. Seeing them is not guaranteed: it takes patience and a bit of luck with high tide.
Are there pet-friendly places to stay in Puerto Madryn?
Yes: Puerto Madryn has about 70 places to stay that accept pets, mostly cabins and apartments; few hotels do. Of the places in this guide, Rayentray Las Restingas Hotel De Mar and The Paradise allow pets (check beforehand whether there is a surcharge). See pet-friendly places to stay in Puerto Madryn →
