Where to stay in Bariloche: best areas and recommended hotels (2026)
Bariloche is the gateway to Nahuel Huapi National Park: a mountain town on the shores of a huge lake, with pebble beaches, forests and peaks just minutes from the centre. It has two busy seasons: summer, for hiking, boat trips and driving the Circuito Chico, and winter, for skiing at Cerro Catedral. Picking the right area shapes the whole trip: the centre puts everything within walking distance, Avenida Bustillo adds lake views and quiet, and Llao Llao is pure forest.
How to get to Bariloche
Bariloche has its own airport less than 20 minutes from the centre, and you can also get there by bus or by car.
✈️Bariloche International Airport (BRC) — about 14 km east of the centre: around 17 minutes by taxi or car and around 24 minutes on the number 72 bus.
🛫Flights from Buenos Aires — direct all year round from Aeroparque (and some from Ezeiza), taking about 2 h to 2 h 25. In winter 2026 there were also direct flights from Brazil; the rest of the year you connect via Buenos Aires.
🚌Long-distance bus — from Retiro (Buenos Aires) it takes 20 to 24 hours, with daily departures. From Osorno and Puerto Montt there are buses that cross via the Cardenal Samoré pass; the total journey time depends on the wait at customs.
🚗By car — from Buenos Aires it's 1,568 km (almost 20 hours of driving) via the RN 5, RN 22 and RN 237. If you're coming in from Chile over the Cardenal Samoré pass, check the border opening hours beforehand.
🏞️Villa La Angostura — 82 km along the RN 40: around 1 hour by car or 1.5 hours by bus. This is where the Seven Lakes Route begins, roughly 107-110 km to San Martín de los Andes.
🚍City buses (Mi Bus) — paid only with a SUBE card, no cash, and the card isn't sold or topped up at the airport. Useful lines: 72 (airport), 20 (Bustillo and Llao Llao) and 55 (Cerro Catedral).
The Civic Centre, Calle Mitre and the lakefront: you can walk to restaurants, chocolate shops and tour agencies, and every bus line starts here. It's the area with the most hostels and 3-star hotels. Between June and January lots of school-leaver groups arrive and gather around Calle Mitre: if you want peace and quiet at that time of year, ask for a room at the back.
2. Avenida Bustillo (km 1 to 8) Lake views and tranquillity
The lakeside strip west of the centre, as far as Playa Bonita, with lakefront hotels, inns and cabins. From km 2.5 the centre is about 2.5 km away, and the number 20 bus runs the length of the avenue. It suits couples and families with a car. The downside: there are few restaurants within walking distance, and at night it's best to get around by taxi or car.
3. Llao Llao and Circuito Chico Pure nature
Forest and lake inside the National Park, between km 18 and 25, with family-run inns and hotels with spas. Boat trips to Isla Victoria leave from Puerto Pañuelo. The centre is about 35 minutes away by car or 49 on the number 20 bus. It's the most isolated area: for dinner and shopping you depend on a car or the bus.
Tours and activities in Bariloche
Lake, forest and mountains just minutes from the centre: these are the outings you shouldn't miss.
7 recommended places to stay in Bariloche
Seven places to stay spread across the three areas, from central hostels to lakefront hotels. The pros and cons come from what guests mention again and again in their reviews.

10The best hostel in Bariloche!
The hostel is lovely, with a tremendous view! Lots of bathrooms! Great atmosphere and heating: you can walk around in a T-shirt in the middle of winter. Maybe breakfast could have more options, but it has to be said the home-made bread is delicious.

If you hire a car it's a good option. Away from the traffic in the centre, across from the lake. A very pretty view from our room. We couldn't manage to regulate the room temperature properly.

Plan the rest of your trip
All the Mi Bus lines start from the centre: the 72 to the airport, the 20 along Avenida Bustillo to Llao Llao and Puerto Pañuelo (every 20 minutes, about a 49-minute ride) and the 55 to Cerro Catedral. They can only be paid with a SUBE card, which you'll need to get in town. If you're staying on Bustillo or in Llao Llao, a car gives you a lot of freedom; if not, agencies pick you up from your accommodation for excursions. There are also taxis and private cabs (remises).
The most popular things to see and do in Bariloche
Circuito Chico — About 60 km skirting Nahuel Huapi, with viewpoints, Llao Llao and Puerto Pañuelo; by car, by bike or on a tour.
Cerro Campanario — A chairlift climbs to the summit (1,050 m), with one of the most famous panoramic views in the area.
Isla Victoria and the Arrayanes Forest — Catamaran trip from Puerto Pañuelo to a forest of myrtle trees with cinnamon-coloured bark.
Cerro Catedral — The largest ski resort in the area; outside the season, the lifts only run on certain days.
Cerro Tronador and Ventisquero Negro — Full-day trip about 160 km along the RN 40, with a single-lane gravel stretch that runs one way at set times.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to stay in the centre or on Avenida Bustillo?
If you're arriving without a car and want to walk out to dinner, the centre is the most practical: all the buses and excursions leave from there. If you're travelling as a couple or a family and hiring a car, km 1 to 8 of Bustillo give you lake views and more quiet. The number 20 bus runs the whole length of the avenue, paid with a SUBE card.
When is the ski season at Cerro Catedral?
It normally runs from July to September and can stretch to mid-October if there's snow. In 2026 it opened on 7 July and was extended until 12 October, for the mountain's 90th anniversary. For skiing, the most convenient options are staying on Bustillo, which is on the way to the mountain, or in the centre, where the number 55 bus starts.
How do I get from the airport to the centre?
By taxi or private cab it's about 17 minutes (14 km). There's also the number 72 bus, which takes about 24 minutes, but it can only be paid with a SUBE card, which isn't sold or topped up at the airport: if you're not bringing one from another Argentine city, a taxi is the simplest way in.
Can I do the Circuito Chico and Isla Victoria without a car?
Yes. The number 20 bus goes all the way to Puerto Pañuelo, next to Llao Llao, in about 50 minutes from the centre. From there the catamaran leaves for Isla Victoria and the Arrayanes Forest. The full Circuito Chico is about 60-65 km; to do it all in one day there are tours of around 10 hours.
What's the weather like in Bariloche?
December to February is the driest and mildest period, with highs of about 23 °C and cool nights (6-7 °C). Rain is concentrated from May to August, with June the wettest month; in town it snows mainly from May to October. The wind is strong from October to February: pack warm layers even if you're travelling in summer.
Are there pet-friendly places to stay in Bariloche?
Yes: Bariloche has about 150 places to stay that accept pets, mostly cabins and apartments; few hotels do. None of the places in this guide allow pets. See pet-friendly places to stay in Bariloche →
