Where to stay in El Chaltén: best areas and recommended hotels (2026)

El Chaltén is a mountain village of fewer than 2,000 people, founded in 1985 at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy, inside Los Glaciares National Park. It bills itself as Argentina's Trekking Capital, and with good reason: the trails to Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre start right from the village streets. It's a place for hikers and active travellers who come to stay for several days. Bear in mind: there's no airport, and many services close in winter.

How to get to El Chaltén

El Chaltén has no airport: almost everyone arrives via El Calafate and continues north by road.

✈️Nearest airport: El Calafate (FTE), Comandante Armando Tola — about 200 km and roughly 2 h 40 by road. The village has no airport of its own.
🛫Flights to El Calafate — Aerolíneas Argentinas and JetSMART fly from Aeroparque and Ezeiza (Buenos Aires).
🚌Bus from El Calafate — Cal-Tur, Chaltén Travel and TAQSA, about 3 h, all year round. They stop at the airport, so you can step off the plane and onto the bus. In high season there are up to 10 departures each way; from May to September, around 2 a day.
🚗By car — 215 km of paved road from El Calafate (about 3 h) on RP 11 and RN 40. There are no petrol stations along the way: set off with a full tank; the only stop is the La Leona roadhouse. In winter there may be snow and ice.
🛣️North along RN 40 — long-distance buses run to Los Antiguos, Esquel, El Bolsón and Bariloche (about 1,446 km and 18 h to Bariloche). Check dates and frequencies before planning your trip.
🚶Within the village — you can walk across it in about 15 minutes: the bus station is at the southern end and the trail to Laguna de los Tres starts at the northern end. To Lago del Desierto (37 km) you go by minibus, shared taxi or car.

The 3 best areas to stay in El Chaltén

Southern entrance to El Chaltén, next to the bus station, with the mountains behind

1. South: village entrance and bus station Easiest on arrival

This is the gateway to the village: the bus station is on Perito Moreno street, and around it —Antonio Rojo, Av. Lago del Desierto and the first blocks of San Martín— there are well-rated inns. Getting off the bus and walking two blocks with your backpack is a big plus. The downside: it's the opposite end from the Laguna de los Tres trail, about 15 extra minutes on foot each day.

Avenida San Martín in the centre of El Chaltén, with shops and restaurants

2. Centre: middle of Av. San Martín and Lionel Terray The best balance

This is the busiest stretch of the main avenue, with restaurants, grocery stores and shops close at hand in season. From here everything is less than 10 minutes' walk away, both the bus station and the trailheads. The downside: it's noisier on the avenue in summer, and a recurring complaint in reviews across the village is small rooms and thin walls.

Northern end of El Chaltén, where the trail to Laguna de los Tres begins

3. North: far end of Av. San Martín The hikers' choice

The trail to Laguna de los Tres, 8 to 10 hours there and back, starts right at the end of San Martín, so staying here saves time every morning. It has some much-reviewed hostels and a few places with mountain views. The downside: it's far from the bus station, about 15 minutes on foot or by taxi, which is a hassle on arrival and departure days.

Tours and activities in El Chaltén

Almost everything is done on foot, straight from the village. For the long trails, allow spare days in case Fitz Roy wakes up hidden in cloud.

Plan the rest of your trip

You don't need a car in the village: everything is less than 15 minutes' walk away and the main trails start on foot from Av. San Martín. For Chorrillo del Salto, the boat trip or the Huemul Glacier, along the road to Lago del Desierto (37 km of gravel), there are minibuses and shared taxis, or you can drive yourself. In winter most taxis stop running, so it's best to arrange transfers in advance.

The most popular things to see and do in El Chaltén

  • Laguna de los Tres (Fitz Roy) — The classic: 20-25 km there and back, 8 to 10 hours, with a very steep final kilometre; it starts at the end of Av. San Martín.
  • Laguna Torre — 18-19 km there and back, 6 to 8 hours, almost all flat after the first 3 km.
  • Chorrillo del Salto — A waterfall at km 4 of the road to Lago del Desierto, already inside the national park: ideal for a rest day.
  • Boat trip on Lago del Desierto — About an hour's sailing towards the Vespignani and Huemul glaciers; runs from October to April, every day except Wednesdays.
  • Huemul Glacier — A short 2 km trail with 220 m of elevation gain (~1 h 30 there and back) beside Lago del Desierto; you pay for private access on site.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fly directly to El Chaltén?
No. El Chaltén has no airport: you need to fly to El Calafate (FTE), about 200 km away. Calafate–Chaltén buses stop at the airport in both directions, so you can combine flight and bus without spending a night in El Calafate; the ride takes about 2 h 40 from the airport. In high season it's best to buy your bus ticket several days in advance.
Is it worth going in winter?
Only if you're after peace and quiet and can accept the limitations. From April-May to October most shops, restaurants, agencies and taxis close, and only some accommodation stays open: before reserving for those months, check that yours will be open. On top of that, snow on trails and roads and short days limit hiking, and the Lago del Desierto boat trips don't run from June to August.
Do you have to pay to hike the trails?
Yes. Since October 2024 the northern sector of Los Glaciares National Park, where El Chaltén's trails are, charges an entrance fee. The pass is bought online on the official website or by QR code at the access points, by card only: cash is not accepted. Carry your card on hiking day and check the current fee before you set off.
How many days do you need to see Fitz Roy?
It's best to stay at least three days, because the summit is covered in cloud most of the time. Also, the hike to Laguna de los Tres takes 8 to 10 hours there and back with 800-900 m of elevation gain, and the one to Laguna Torre 6 to 8 hours. With three or four nights you'll have time to wait for a clear day.
Are there cash machines and a petrol station?
The village has just one cash machine and one petrol station, both open all year. It's wise to bring cash from El Calafate in case the cash machine breaks down or runs out of notes, and to fill up before leaving, because there are no petrol stations along the 215 km road from El Calafate.
Are there pet-friendly places to stay in El Chaltén?
Yes: El Chaltén has about 3 places to stay that accept pets, mostly cabins and apartments; few hotels do. None of the places in this guide allow pets. See pet-friendly places to stay in El Chaltén →
