Where to stay in Ushuaia: best areas and recommended hotels (2026)

Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego, is wedged between the mountains and the Beagle Channel and serves as a base for two very different trips. In summer it fills up with people sailing the Beagle, hiking the National Park or boarding ships to Antarctica; in winter it welcomes skiers heading to Cerro Castor. Choosing the right area makes a big difference to your stay: the centre lets you do everything on foot, the hillsides add views, and the Martial Glacier road brings forest and calm.

How to get to Ushuaia

Ushuaia is at the far southern tip of the country: flying is the most practical option, though there are also long-distance buses and Route 3.

✈️Malvinas Argentinas International Airport (USH) — about 4 km from the centre. There's no bus: you get there by taxi or private car (remis) in 10-15 minutes.
🛫From Buenos Aires — Aerolíneas Argentinas and JetSMART fly all year round from Aeroparque and Ezeiza; the flight takes about 3 h 35-3 h 40. From Santiago de Chile there's no direct flight: the route is sold with a connection, usually via Buenos Aires.
🚌Long-distance bus — to Río Gallegos, about 12 h; to Punta Arenas (Chile), 11-12 h, crossing the Strait of Magellan by ferry. In summer it's best to book your ticket weeks in advance.
🚗By car on National Route 3 — about 3,045 km from Buenos Aires, with an unavoidable stretch through Chile and a crossing of the Strait on the Primera Angostura ferry (about 20 minutes). From Río Gallegos to Ushuaia it's about 570 km with two border crossings.
🏔️From El Calafate — direct flight of about 1 h 20. There's no direct bus overland: via Río Gallegos, the journey takes around 17 h 30 in total.
🚍Local transport — municipal city buses, paid with a SUBE card, debit/credit card or QR code. Regular services run from the centre to the National Park on fixed timetables, and some hotels on the Martial Glacier road have their own shuttle.

The 3 best areas to stay in Ushuaia

Streets in central Ushuaia with the Beagle Channel and the mountains behind

1. Centre and waterfront The most practical

For travellers without a car, heading out on boat trips or boarding for Antarctica. Everything is within walking distance: the tourist pier where the boat trips depart, San Martín street with its restaurants and agencies, and the Prison Museum. On the downside: several reviews complain about street noise and thin walls, and whether you get a channel view depends on the room.

Houses on the hillsides of Ushuaia overlooking the bay and the Beagle Channel

2. Upper hillsides above the centre Beagle Channel views

For those who want a view of the Beagle without straying far from the centre and don't mind an uphill walk. From these steep streets you can see the bay and the channel above the rooftops, and San Martín street is about 5-10 blocks away. On the downside: the walk back is uphill, hard going at night, in snow or with suitcases, and there are few shops nearby.

Fuegian forest on the road to the Martial Glacier, above Ushuaia

3. Martial Glacier road Forest and calm

For couples and families with a car who value views and forest over city life. The hotels sit among the Fuegian forest, with picture windows facing the Beagle and close to the glacier trail, whose base is about 7 km from the centre. On the downside: without a car you rely on taxis or the hotel shuttle, which doesn't run often, and there are few places to eat nearby.

Tours and activities in Ushuaia

Ushuaia combines sea, forest and mountains just a few kilometres from the centre. These are the outings most worth planning, depending on the time of year.

Plan the rest of your trip

If you stay in the centre, you don't need a car: you can get around on foot, the boat trips leave from the tourist pier and regular services run to the National Park on fixed timetables. There's no bus from the airport, but a taxi or remis takes 10-15 minutes. A car is useful if you're staying on the Martial Glacier road or want to visit the park or Laguna Esmeralda at your own pace; in winter the park requires snow tyres or chains.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to visit Ushuaia in summer or winter?
It depends on your plans. December to February is the mildest period, with highs of 13-14 °C and up to 17 hours of daylight: it's the season for boat trips, trekking and Antarctic cruises, and hotel occupancy tops 90%. If you want to ski, the Cerro Castor season runs from late June or July to early October, always depending on the snow.
Do you need to hire a car in Ushuaia?
It isn't essential. There's no bus from the airport, but a taxi or remis takes 10-15 minutes. The centre is easy to explore on foot and regular services run to the National Park on fixed timetables. A car is useful if you're staying on the Martial Glacier road or want to visit the park or Laguna Esmeralda at your own pace. In winter the park requires snow tyres or chains.
Can you go to Antarctica from Ushuaia, and when?
Yes: Ushuaia is the main departure port for expedition cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula. The season runs from late October or November to March, and in 2024-25 the port handled 422 departures with around 105,000 passengers. It's best to arrive a day or two before embarkation and reserve accommodation early, because the centre fills up on those days.
When can you see penguins in Ushuaia?
The colony on Isla Martillo, in the Beagle Channel, hosts Magellanic penguins and, in smaller numbers, gentoos between October and April, their breeding season. You get there by boat from the port of Ushuaia or overland to Estancia Harberton; only one company offers the walk on the island itself, with limited places. Outside that window the boat trips still run, but without penguins.
How many hours of daylight does Ushuaia get through the year?
The difference is huge because of the latitude: in June the day lasts about 7 h 20 and in December it reaches about 17 h 10. In summer that lets you combine a morning boat trip with an afternoon trek. In winter, excursions are shorter and it's best to plan road trips in daylight, especially if you're driving in snow.
Are there pet-friendly places to stay in Ushuaia?
Yes: Ushuaia has about 50 places to stay that accept pets, mostly cabins and apartments; few hotels do. None of the places in this guide allow pets. See pet-friendly places to stay in Ushuaia →
