Where to Stay in Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes: Areas and Hotels (2026)
Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes are the two ends of the Seven Lakes Road, in northern Argentine Patagonia. La Angostura is a forest village on the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake, with the Arrayanes Forest and Cerro Bayo. San Martín is a small, walkable city on Lácar Lake, with beaches, boat trips and Cerro Chapelco. If you want lakes, trails and skiing at a calmer pace than Bariloche, this is your area.
How to get to Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes
San Martín de los Andes has its own airport, Villa La Angostura is an hour from Bariloche airport, and the two towns are linked by the Seven Lakes Road.
✈️Chapelco Airport (CPC) — serves San Martín de los Andes and is 23 km from downtown: about 29 minutes by taxi, remís or transfer. There is no regular bus to the airport.
🛫Flights to Chapelco — Aerolíneas Argentinas and JetSMART fly from Aeroparque (Buenos Aires) in about 2 h 15 min; there are also flights from Neuquén city (50 minutes). There is no direct flight from Santiago de Chile: you arrive via Bariloche or overland.
🛬Bariloche (BRC) airport — the logical choice for Villa La Angostura, since it has many more flights. It is 82 km away: about 1 h 10 by car or 1 h 30 on the direct AeroAngostura bus.
🚌Long-distance bus — from Retiro (Buenos Aires) to San Martín de los Andes, Vía Bariloche and Nueva Chevallier run the route. It is a long trip: if you are coming from Buenos Aires, check flights too.
🚗By car and from Chile — from Buenos Aires to San Martín it is 1,524 km (about 17 hours). From Chile you cross via the Cardenal Samoré pass, about 42 km from Villa La Angostura, or via Mamuil Malal, from Pucón. On summer hours, both open from 8 am to 7 pm; in winter, Samoré requires snow chains.
🏞️Seven Lakes Road — the two towns are 108 km apart on paved Route 40: about 2 hours by car or 2 h 15 min on the daily Albus bus. In winter it can be cut off by snow or landslides.
The 3 best areas to stay in Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes
1. Villa La Angostura downtown (El Cruce) The most practical without a car
El Cruce is the village's commercial center, where Arrayanes, Nahuel Huapi and Siete Lagos avenues meet. The bus station, chocolate shops, restaurants and tour agencies are steps away. The road to Cerro Bayo and the Puerto de la Villa are about 3 km away. The downside: no lake views, and around the crossing there are complaints about traffic and nightclub noise.
2. Villa La Angostura on the lake (Puerto Manzano) Lake and quiet
The Puerto Manzano peninsula, about 7 km from downtown, and La Villa, with Mansa and Brava bays, 3 km away. This is where the inns and hotels with pools, spas and their own shoreline are, and where the catamarans to the Arrayanes Forest depart. The local bus runs all year, but for dining or shopping you depend on a car. Some access roads are steep gravel, awkward in snow.
3. San Martín de los Andes A city for walking
A small city on Lácar Lake, where hotel, beach, pier and restaurants are a few blocks apart. The boat trip to Quila Quina leaves from the waterfront pier, Cerro Chapelco is about 20 km away and the airport 23 km. The downsides: it is 2 hours from Villa La Angostura and the Arrayanes Forest, and in winter the Seven Lakes Road can be cut off.

Frequently asked questions
Should you stay in Villa La Angostura or in San Martín de los Andes?
It depends on what you want close at hand. Villa La Angostura is an hour from Bariloche, has the Arrayanes Forest and Cerro Bayo, and is more forest-oriented. San Martín is a small, walkable city on Lácar Lake, with a beach, boat trips to Quila Quina and Cerro Chapelco 20 minutes away. They are 2 hours apart: many people spend a few nights in each.
Which airport should I fly to?
For San Martín de los Andes, Chapelco (CPC) airport, about 23 km from downtown, with flights from Buenos Aires by Aerolíneas Argentinas and JetSMART. For Villa La Angostura, Bariloche (BRC) is generally the better choice: it has more flights and is 82 km away, an hour by car, with a direct bus to the village. From Santiago there is no direct flight to Chapelco: you arrive via Bariloche or overland.
Is the Seven Lakes Road paved? Can you drive it in winter?
Yes: the roughly 108 km of Route 40 between Villa La Angostura and San Martín have been paved since 2015. In winter it can be cut off: in July 2026 it was closed at night because of snowfall and a landslide near Catritre cut it off completely; in August it reopened with chains mandatory. Before setting out, check conditions with Vialidad Nacional and don't drive it at night.
How do you get to the Arrayanes Forest?
From the Puerto de la Villa, 3 km from downtown Villa La Angostura, there are two ways: walk or cycle the 12 km Quetrihué trail, or take a catamaran from Brava or Mansa bays (about 45-50 minutes). On foot you must enter before 11 am in winter and before 2 pm in summer. Many people walk in and return by boat.
Where to ski: Cerro Bayo or Chapelco?
Cerro Bayo is right next to Villa La Angostura (its access road starts 3 km from downtown) and faces Nahuel Huapi; in 2026 it opened in mid-June and operated until late September. Chapelco is bigger and about 20 km from San Martín; in 2026 it opened on July 11 and extended the season until September 30. Dates depend on the snow.
